Description: A sweet place to visit.

After filling up at Maquet’s Rail House, my girlfriend and I decided to stop in at Maurie’s to see what we could find for some post-burger snacking. What we weren’t expecting was a candy store, a coffeehouse and a shop with those little odds and ends that you can only find in a shop that sells odds and ends.

As we entered, we were greeted by the owner. She welcomed us with the warmth that you get from a locally-owned store. She asked how we were doing and asked if we had been there before. Seeing as we hadn’t, she told us a little bit about the place and how they were working to put in a coffee bar on the left side of the store. It wasn’t finished so we couldn’t sample their goods but it was 90% complete and looked great from what we could see.

We slowly wandered around as our food settled in our bellies and our eyes filled with sugary delights. The amount of time that we spent looking at stuff ended up being longer than I would’ve expected. There was just so much cool stuff to look at and discover. I snagged a few things and so did my girlfriend. One of the things we snagged were those Harry Potter jelly beans. It came in a container that you would have it dispense one or two jelly beans at random and you took a chance on it being a delicious or disgusting one. I may have tried 4-5 while we sat in the car.

The coffee side of the store opened about 2 weeks after our visit. We had every intention of checking it out but sometimes life just gets in the way. Because of that, we never got to check it out before the business closed/sold and relocated to Eureka, IL. They seemed to pick up right where the Pekin shop stopped. I do have every intention of trying the Eureka location at some point, so keep your eyes peeled for that when it happens.

Oh yeah, those jelly beans were nasty (as intended). I seemed to get a bad flavor every time I took the challenge. But, that didn’t stop me from trying them out until they were eventually all gone.
