Description: Is China King the King of all Chinese restaurants?
Due to work, I found myself staying up in Burr Ridge for a few days. I am not familiar with this area due to not visiting Chicago as much as I should (mostly due to my hatred for it’s traffic). But, here we are and I have some pent up travel itching that needed scratched. Work let us break for an hour and gave us a list of local restaurants to try. China King caught my eye as I was craving Chinese for awhile now. I hopped in my car and headed over once GPS gave me the route.
It was exactly what I expected as walked up to the front door. China King is very much like the Chinese restaurants in my area and probably like the ones around you, too. It’s one of those little places with menus that look like they have been hanging up since 1972. It has a menu that has a million and a half choices on it. The seating inside is limited to a table or two and you get the feeling you should take your food to go instead of eating in. Perfect. This is exactly what I was craving. The sign on the door said they were only offering Carry Out. Probably due to the pandemic. Either way, it worked out well as I planned on eating in my hotel room.
There was a younger guy behind the plexiglass that covered most of the window where you ordered. I kindly asked him if he had a menu I could take with me. After mumbling a bit, he rudely pointed to some by the door that I missed due to a plant blocking my view. Without really looking at the menu that was taped to the plexiglass, I ordered my usual chicken fried rice. With out knowing what dinner would bring due to work, I grabbed a large, just in case I needed leftovers for dinner. (Thankfully I got the biggest size as I am eating it now for supper while I type this up.)
He was a bit rude in taking my card and processing my order. But to his defense, I spaced off and walked to the other side of the small foyer with the receipt I was supposed to sign. As I waited for my food, a lady came in and asked for a menu as well. He was a bit rude in telling her where they were. Maybe he was having a bad day or something. I’m not sure but I am docking their score a bit for it.
It didn’t take but 10 minutes for my order to finish and I was happy to dip out of there and head back to my room to dig in and eat as much as I could before our day-long meeting kicked back up. I sat down at the desk in my hotel room and cracked the fortune cookie first. It said; “You have a natural grace and great consideration for others.” This seems pretty spot-on for me. I quickly dug in to the giant container that held my chicken fried rice. Each bite was exactly what I was craving and it was every bit as greasy/juicy as I wanted. I finished off half the container before I needed to allot myself a few minutes to lie down and let the food settle before I waddled back to the meeting room.
For being used to the Chinese restaurants in the Central Illinois area, I was happy that China King was exactly the same as every other one that I have been to. If there is one consistency in my travels, it’s that all these locally-owned Chinese restaurants deliver the same thing. Some are better than others but the baseline is about the same amongst them all.
To answer the question I posed in the beginning… is the China King Restaurant the king of all Chinese restaurants? It may be the king of Chinese restaurants in Burr Ridge but on my list of place… no, but it does an admirable job of delivering deliciousness. I just wish the guy taking my order wasn’t so off-putting or else I would’ve rated this place a solid 4.5/5.
